Does a water tank need an overflow?

Most tanks require an overflow to comply to water regulations

part of the regulations are to prevent the inlet getting submerged and thus increases the change of contaminating the mains supply

therefore to help reduce this tanks and vessels should be fitting with an overflow so that if the water level becomes higher that normal say due to the inlet not shutting off the water has some where to go via the overflow to prevent the level submerging the inlet and potentially filling beyond the top of a tank and spilling over and into the surrounding area

in conclusion any tank not designed as a pressure vesssel should have an overflow and vent to equalise any pressure from water coming into the tank and the vacuum from the water going out,

for water tanks the overflows and vents should also be screened with a mesh to prevent ingress of debris and insects rodents and other vermin

What different Water tank types are available?

Here at Drayton Tank we provide several variations on the same tank capacities and sizes, we have briefly detailed these types below to help you when choosing a tank suitable for your requirements.

Water Tank Types:

One Piece Water Tanks –

One Piece Water Tank Types

The One Piece Tank type is a single moulded Open Top Tank that is supplied with a Bolted Lid, the tank is manufactured from approved materials for its purpose including Potable Drinking Water (WRAS Approved),

The Tank is normally supplied with the bolted lid, the lid should always be bolted down as it provides integral support to the tank walls, the tank can also be supplied open top, which usually requires the tank to be made stronger,

Two Piece Water Tank Types –

Two Piece Water Tank Types

The Two Piece Tank Type is moulded in Two Sections, split horizontally half way up the internal height of the tank with a bolted flange for fixing back together once in situ with the supplied bolted and mastic sealer,

The two sections are usually rotated to allow them to pass through the restricted access, The sections can also be specifically designed to fit through a required gap eg doorways, which may require the tank to become a Three piece water Tank.

Sectional Water Tank Types –

Sectional Tanks are Water tanks made up of a number of panel to create a larger tank in a space like a basement where restrictions like doorways and corridors and stairwells prevent a single large tank access.

Sectional tanks themselves come in 3 Different Water Tank Types

IFB – Internally Flanged Base – this is the most common type of sectional tank and is externally flanged sized and lid, with the tank base being internally flanged so the external of the tank base is flat and suitable to be placed onto a flat smooth concrete floor, pad or other flat surface – These tanks require 500mm Around each side to allow assembly.

EFB – Externally Flange Base – These sectional are externally flanges on the sides, lid and base, and are designed to sit on Pillars, walls or Steels that are raised off the ground, also classed as fully draining sectional tanks, the supporting Steels or walls should match the joints on the tank panels (usually 1m) so the external flange of the base panels rest centrally on each steel or wall. – These tanks require 500mm Around each side to allow assembly.

TIF – Totally Internal Flanged – TIF Tanks are produced with all flanges internally bolted, this means the tank only needs 50mm around the tank to enable assembly, utilizing the space available, these tanks can be sat on a concrete Floor or plinth.

Twin Compartment Water Tanks –

These tanks are usually one of the above types of tanks, with the added feature of a division plate inside the tank to create two separate compartments, usually the plate is centrally spaced to give two equal compartments, also can be off centre if required by the design,

The tank would usually require 2x the accessories and fittings to provide the access and the fittings to each side, enabling the tank to be drained down and maintained whilst keeping one side in operation.

BSP Thread Information

What are BSP thread sizes?

British Standard Pipe (BSP) thread is a standard thread type used extensively across the globe for plumbing connections (but not in North America).

The standard defines the number of threads per inch (pitch) as well as the angle that each thread is engineered to. BSP threads have rounded valleys and troughs with a 55 degree pitch (this is known as Whitworth type).

BSP sizes are always in imperial measurements and some have commonly metricised names. The table below summarises BSP sizes to help with general identification. Major diameter is slightly less than the actual outside diameter of the threads. Minor diameter is the measurement of the inside of a female threaded connection, from thread to thread.

There are two types of BSP threads; Tapered (BSPT) and parallel (BSPP). The vast majority of BSP threads for water fittings are parallel.
